Everything you need to know about Lip Fillers

Lip filler is one of the most requested treatments at Toribella, and also one of the most misunderstood. Done well, it isn't about making a dramatic change; it's about enhancing what's already there, softening fine lines, hydration, restoring lost volume, or adding a subtle fullness that still looks like you. The key is a customized approach and a practitioner who takes the time to understand your goals before anything else. Here's what to know before your appointment.

What's the difference between the filler options for lips?

There are many types of filler, and the right one is specific to you. Your practitioner should choose based on your lips, your skin, your goals, and whether you've had filler before — all of which guide the choice. Fillers range from very light to more sturdy.  It comes down to your type, your goals, whether you've had filler before, your age, and how your body metabolizes it.

How much filler is normal if someone just wants fuller lips?

People come in with all kinds of specific asks — "I only want half a syringe," "the last place used this much and it wasn't enough," "it was too much." The honest answer is that there isn't one normal amount, because it's customized. We match the type of filler and how much we use to your goals and to what your body is like, so you get the result you're actually looking for.

How do you keep lip filler from looking overdone?

We always believe in starting small, letting the swelling from treatment settle, then taking another look at how the results are meeting your goal. A lot of people begin with a half syringe and come back in two weeks. We always see you for a follow up.

What should I expect at a lip filler appointment?

Plan for a little downtime. Lip filler can cause some bruising and swelling — some people bruise a lot, some barely at all, and there's no reliable way to predict which you'll be ahead of time. We apply a numbing cream first, which sits on the skin for about 25 to 30 minutes before we begin.

The swelling is worth understanding in advance. When you first have filler, the initial swelling can be startling, but when it comes down, and then you see the real result. That's why we always follow up in two to three weeks to look at where things have settled. Our philosophy is less is more: we're happy to start with less and add more at your follow-up, because that early swelling can give you a false picture of the final look.

How long does lip filler last?

For most people, about 12 to 18 months — but everyone's different. Some metabolize filler more quickly than others. And believe it or not, the more you talk, kiss, and move your mouth, the faster you can metabolize it, because all that movement keeps things moving through your system.
