What Is CO2 Laser skin Resurfacing?

CO2 laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective skin rejuvenation treatments available. Unlike microneedling, which uses physical needles to create micro-injuries, a CO2 laser uses concentrated light energy to ablate — essentially vaporize — microscopic columns of damaged skin. This controlled treatment triggers the body's natural healing process, turning over old skin cells and stimulating fresh collagen production in the deeper layers.

The result is smoother, tighter, more even-toned skin with a refined texture that patients often describe as a glass-skin appearance.

What Does CO2 Laser Resurfacing Treat?

This treatment is especially effective for concerns that neurotoxins and other non-ablative treatments cannot fully address:

  • Lip lines: The fine vertical lines around the mouth — sometimes called lipstick lines — are one of the most common reasons patients seek CO2 resurfacing.

  • Crow's feet and eye area lines: Delicate skin around the eyes responds well to laser resurfacing.

  • Deep forehead lines: Lines too deep for neurotoxins alone benefit from the collagen remodeling that CO2 provides.

  • Cheek lines and expression lines: Areas where Botox cannot be used because the lines are caused by structural skin aging rather than muscle movement.

  • Neck, chest, and hands: Aging skin in areas that don't respond to injectables.

  • Pores: Enlarged pores, especially on and around the nose, are visibly refined.

  • Stretch marks and skin laxity: Body areas including the abdomen have shown significant improvement in both texture and tightness.

  • Effective trearment for: Rhytids/wrinkles • Scars • Acne Scars • Pore Size • Dyschromia • Seborrheic Keratosis • Sebaceous Hyperplasia • Angiofibroma • Lentigo Simplex • Rhinophyma

What to Expect Before, During, and After Treatment

Before your appointment: Avoid sun exposure and discontinue retinol, vitamin C, BHAs, and AHAs as directed. Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to treatment.

During treatment: A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure. Treatment time varies depending on the areas being addressed and the depth of treatment selected.

After treatment: Expect some downtime. Your provider will recommend healing ointments to use until the skin has fully recovered. Avoid exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and direct sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours minimum — or until fully healed. Sunscreen is essential throughout the healing process and beyond.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

The standard protocol is three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. After completing the initial series, one maintenance treatment per year keeps results looking their best.

Treatment Depth and Frequency

CO2 resurfacing can be customized to three depth levels:

  • Light: Minimal downtime, best for maintenance and mild texture improvement. Can be repeated up to three times.

  • Medium: Moderate downtime, effective for lines and pore refinement. Can be repeated up to three times.

  • Deep: Maximum results with up to two weeks of downtime. Often a single treatment is sufficient.

Your provider will recommend the appropriate depth based on your skin concerns, goals, and tolerance for downtime. Pricing adjusts based on treatment depth.
